The ultra-religious orthodox party Shas has become the kingmaker in the political arena in Israel by refusing to join a coalition government led by Israeli Foreign Minister Tzipi Livni because she could not guarantee that a newly formed Israeli government would not divide the city of Jerusalem.
The division of Jerusalem is on the table in the discussions between the Israelis and the Palestinians in order to bring about a peaceful resolution to the struggle by the Palestinian people to have their own state with at least a portion of Jerusalem as the capital of this Palestinian state. The potential government that would be formed by Livni would be ready to offer to divide Jerusalem which may cause the Israelis to go to early elections to determine the Israeli leadership for the near future.
Jimmy's Prophetic Prospective on the News
An Israeli government that would once again divide the city of Jerusalem would indeed set the state for Bible prophecy to be fulfilled.
The Israeli Foreign Minister, Tzipi Livni, the newly elected head of the present ruling political party in Israel, has been trying for a number of weeks to form a coalition government where Livni would become Prime Minister. She has run into a major roadblock, the ultra-religions Shas party, who is refusing to join the coalition government unless they are assured that Jerusalem will not be divided.
This scenario has several interesting elements that fit right into the prophetic scenario found in Bible prophecy. There is the status of Jerusalem in the peace process - divided or united. Either way, Jerusalem is the center of controversy, a real burden to the politicians - and this was fortold in Zechariah 12:2-3.
There is also the Israeli-Palestinian conflict to be considered in light of Bible prophecy. Ezekiel 35, Malachi 1, and the little book of Obadiah all reveal that the Israelis and the Palestinians, Biblical descendants of Jacob and Esau, will be in conflict in the last days.
Even the idea that God instituted human government is at play here and is also evidence that Bible prophecy is about to be fulfilled.
