JD: But what are your thoughts from the prospective that you watch the Palestinian people the media all the time? What are your thoughts about that White House gathering between Trump and Abbas?
IM: Well I don’t think this will accomplish for Abbas what he was hoping to accomplish. There are things that he’s not going to fulfill that are fundamental demands of Donald Trump and I hope they’re fundamental demands, and because of that in the end the greater the expectations the worse the disappointment. I think in the end Mahmoud Abbas is going to fall flat on his face here because he’s not going to be able to convince Donald Trump to start putting intense pressure on Israel and I don’t think Donald Trump will go along with that. So, I think in the end Mahmoud Abbas is going to have a big fall following this meeting.
JD: I understand that Mahmoud Abbas said that he demanded from the President in fact, 67 borders would be the starting point for the peace negotiations and a Palestinian state. Is that not a no starter as far as the Israeli leadership is concerned?
IM: Mahmoud Abbas had to repeat his demands that he has never wavered
from for many many years and there are no starters for the Israeli government.
But for his own people he has to be able to show them. And by the way, it was
all published in the Palestinian newspapers today his exact words. He has to
show his people that he is not going to bow down; he’s not going to compromise even
in the face of the new American President.
So, this is Mahmoud Abbas coming in there doing this whole
presentation even though he knows that it’s a non-starter. Like I said before I
think that the Palestinian people by now after years of his presenting himself
as this leader who’s going to accomplish something. I think by now they’ve
given up on him and we see that in the polls and I don’t think they’re going to
fall for it.
