The Jews remember that 40 year period of time that they were wandering in the wilderness by living in a sukkah for 7 days

Listen to Today's Program Play

JD: As soon as that twenty-five hour fast on Yom Kippur is over you go outside and start putting up your sukkah. What indeed is a sukkah and why is it so key to the Feast of Tabernacles up coming?

WM: Well Jimmy most people do try to do that. Myself I began taking out the wooden boards that we put up on our patio that would enclose it together with roofing of frons or other sort of material. The term Tabernacles is of course more to be found in the Christian version of the Bible. We call it booths in which the according to the story in the Bible the children of Israel built themselves booths every time they camped out in the desert and other spots. I think there must have been about 36 or 38 stops along the way from Egypt to eventually to the land of the Promised Land. The idea is that God develops us. Someone once said it’s the only mitzvah in which you put yourself 100 percent into it by simply building a booth and then when the holiday comes you sit down to the festive meal and make the blessing who has commanded us to build a booth.

JD: And at that point you and the family do a lot of activities there. You have some of your meals there, you make meat with some of your friends or business partners, the children play there.

WM: Your home is outside for the next 7 or 8 days depending on where you are; 7 in Israel, 8 outside of the land of Israel and the lands of the dispersion. And you’re supposed to eat all of your meals there, play host to your guest. Many people will sleep outside as much as possible to show that we are again placing our trust in God and asking him to see how we behave on earth and that sense he should extend to us his protective enveloping presence.

JD: Winkie Medad explaining how the Jews build a sukkah and live in it to remember their 40 years of wandering in the wilderness.

We report this information because it is setting the stage for Bible prophecy to be fulfilled.

Winkie’s report helps us to understand the Jewish lifestyle and why the observance of seven Jewish Feast days annually as the Lord has told them to do. However, the Bible in Matthew chapter 17 says that the Jewish Feast of Tabernacles is the time when the kingdom actually begins here on earth. Peter in that passage wanted to build three Tabernacles or sukkahs when he saw the glorified bodies and the kingdom bodies of Jesus, Moses, and Elijah. As Jesus foretold his disciples that the kingdom yet to come is to help us to understand this time of the Feast of Tabernacles.
