JD: Can you give us a little bit of background on the
symbolism of the statue and why Satan is depicted as a seated goat?
DJ: Well this is really strange; I was really surprised
by what I came across. The name of that statue in that depiction is called
baphomet, which actually comes from the French and is probably a corruption of
all things of the name Muhammad.
So, during the Middle Ages a group called the Knight’s Templar or the order of the Temple of Solomon was a group that was
formed by the Catholic Church to protect Israel and Jerusalem as it was during
the Crusade, Jerusalem had been captured by the Muslims. So they were to take
Jerusalem back and they actually turned the Dome of the Rock into a church and
the al aqua mosque into a horse stable and it became a center for the Knights Templar and
so this was a Catholic order.
Later in the Middle Ages the inquisitions were
formed and as the Knights Templar had adopted mystical practices in secret and
what they were accused of having a cultic practices, and they were accused of
worshiping the same thing the Muslims worship because they believe that the Muslims
were worshiping Muhammad; this shows up in those inquisition trials.
In the 1800s a French man had taken on a
Hebrew name, and actually drew something similar to what this statue is based on. So
it had some really strange things. In 1966 when the Church of Satan was formed
by Anton LaVey he adopted this as one of the symbols of the church.
JD: You know its interesting David, I doubt you’ve been
in the Dome of the Rock but a number of times I’ve taken tour groups in the Dome of the Rock, that’s that gold dome building on the Temple Mount in
Jerusalem, and on the marble pillars that are in that building you can see the
image of the goat head in a number of locations. What an interesting connection
that neither one of us realized was that connection between Satanism and Islam
itself.
