JD: China is a major player, how does it fit into the situation of the cold war at the same time with Russia?
BM: I see a dual cold war Jimmy. Certainly when I saw President Trump meeting with President Putin it resurrected especially after all the reactions. These people probably don’t understand the implications as to why President Trump was going in somewhat low key with regard to President Putin. It’s not as if President Trump doesn’t know all the bad stuff that the Russians are doing. He listens to intelligence briefings everyday and he understands the bad things that the Russians and Putin have been up to.
In 1961 when John Kennedy met with Nikita Khrushchev in
Vienna Austria they didn’t get along what so ever. In 1962 the Cuban missile
crisis almost came to blows in terms of throwing nuclear weapons at one another
at that point. Having heard what Mr. Trump said this being probably the worst
relations the two countries have ever had I don’t think it would have paid any
meaningful dividend to go in and throw bombs at Mr. Putin in Helsinki. So that’s
significant but you brought up China’s involved, well I think it is. I think
that what President Trump is trying to do is drive a wedge between Putin and
President Xi Jinping of China. It’s far worse in terms of the cyber attacks on
us and of course its military is well funded and growing exponentially. And of
course they have been claiming not only their own sovereign territory but the
South China Sea, the East China Sea and they’re beginning to show inklings
across the entire world. They are indeed hegemonic and they have global aspirations
and that’s something I think we better wake up to. I hope that the President is
awake to that and I suspect that he is.
