JD: Could you give us just a quick background of May Day? What's its significance to the Communist nations?
WM: Well Jimmy the forerunner of Communism was of course the Socialist movements that developed primarily in Germany and in France even before Carl Marks. In the industrial centers of England, France, and Germany especially there were very long hours, 12 to 14 hours a day and children were working. The Socialist weren't very active. Eventually they picked on the day May 1st as a celebration of a workers and a right to strike, etc. Then of course along comes the 1917 Bolshevik Revolution in Russia. May Day becomes the official holiday of Communist Russia including Socialist Zionist here in Israel. You can still see the red flags being marched down the streets of Tel Aviv until today it's basically part of Arab protest that they've adopted, that May Day protest.
JD: The kibbutzim that was a part of a Communist belief brought out of Europe into the new Jewish state of Israel was it not?
WM: Well don't forget Jimmy historically speaking the bulk of the early Zionist came either from Russia or Eastern Europe in one form or another and of course Ukraine, it later became Ukraine part of the Russian Empire at the time. They were in this type of thinking because that was what was going on because then there was a zar and people were being shot and killed. People were looking for some way to protest. They adopted that. They brought it to the kibbutzim. The kibbutzim became with a small seed, very communistic. There's a difference between Communism an economic or social way of life and what became unfortunately the Communist Empire very political, very impressive that dominated most of the under developed world including Southeast Asia and South America up until fairly recently say 20 to 30 years ago.
